Hey all,
So the untethered jailbreak for 4.3.1 is out, I updated my iPhone 4, which was a pain in the butt and I screwed up and lost all my jailbreak apps (no big deal since I didn't have very many and I only had free apps, but still, it was a pain), I ended up having to restore a couple of times, yeah, it was messy. What's worse is I have no idea why I did it, ha!
So, is there any good reason to upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 on my iPad (first gen)? Any features I'm 'missing' here? Seems to me like it's not really adding anything of value. Thoughts?

That doesn't happen for me. The scrolling continues as it should, even during the momentum phase of the scroll.
That's the way it used to be for me. I don't know when it broke or what might have caused it.

Just wondering if it would be effective to use iDisk as a small CDN (Content Delivery Network) for a website?
I have a website with fairly high traffic and am working to make it as fast as possible. One of the things I am considering is using a CDN for static files. My mostly vacant iDisk account popped into my head as a possible contender. I was wondering if anyone else had tried this?

OK, I can power an FW400 drive from FW800. I think it was my FW400 repeater hub that couldn't be powered.
I imagine an FW800 drive can be powered from FW400, too.

Inspired by a user's thread who is unhappy with the way their KB backlight works (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1130722), I decided to play with the Ambient Light Sensor and KB backlight on my MBP.
I was a bit disappointed to see that unlike under W7 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd318953(v=vs.85).aspx)there is no official API to access the sensor data. Really?
Anyhow, I quickly found this code: http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/chapter10/light/ and various comments around that it doesn't work anymore. A bit more digging led to this code: http://google-mac-qtz-patches.googlecode.com/svn-history/r5/trunk/AmbientLightSensor which does actually work and allowed me to whip this up.

People come to forums such as this for help and to complain. Rare is it that someone logs on to post "My iMac works perfectly and I am 100% satisfied."
But for me, that is exactly the case. My iMac is perfect and I am 100% satisfied with it. It was, other than my iPhone 4, my first Apple product, and as you can see from my sig I have bought a whole lot more. In fact I will be getting a second iMac to replace the last Windows XP machine in my home so that we can now be windows free. Other than my 3 laptops provided to me for my job. Yuck! :p
If you go Apple, you'll never go back. :apple:
iMac = 10
iPhone4 = 10
MBA = 10
iPad2 = 8 (Light bleed)

Talk to Apple. This looks like the infamous Nvidia 8600M issue and may still be covered under Apple's replacement scheme (I actually got a brand new MBP out of them about 6 months out of warranty).

Aladdin Systems, maker of StuffIt , one of the most-used Mac applications ever, changed its name to Allume Systems last month.
The long-standing www.aladdinsys.com web site is now redirected to www.allume.com. They still have the magic lamp logo and refer to themselves on the web and in e-mail as "Allume Systems (formerly Aladdin Systems)".
They changed in order to settle legal disagreements with Aladdin Knowledge Systems (www.ealaddin.com (http://www.ealaddin.com/) or www.aladdin.de ( http://www.aladdin.de/)), maker of dongles and other security products. I happen to use products of both companies, and I sometimes went to one web site when I meant the other. There was probably longstanding confusion between the companies (and maybe also with Aladdin Enterprises (www.aladdin.com/index2.html (http://www.aladdin.com/index2.html)), the original maker of Ghostscript).
Aladdin Systems must have had little choice but to make this change, because they are sacrificing a huge amount of name recognition.
I wonder why they picked "Allume" as their new name. And why not call themselves StuffIt after their most famous product, since they already have www.stuffit.com (http://www.stuffit.com/)?

Yeah - I must have done something stupid - I really can't think how I did it though. I am usually really careful and have been doing this job for over 15 years - but maybe the long hours are taking their toll.
Thanks for the help - me having a panic attack doesn't get the job finished. I guess I'll just have to try to work out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again.
On that note - can you guys recommend a good backup system (seperate from my hard drive)? It needs to be BIG - my current job folder is 16gb - lots of photoshop files etc. And I need to be able to back up/replace after each major change or at the end of the day.

I've done the following once a week on all the laptops we have here, without worry:
-Rubbing alcohol on old washcloth. Takes care of case, keyboard, touchpad, wrist area. Don't saturate the washcloth; just enough to dampen it, then wipe all the surfaces except screen.
-Eyeglass cleaner from drugstore for display. Comes in small spray bottle. Use it with a microfiber cloth for the display. Same as with rubbing alcohol; just enough to dampen the cloth, then wipe display.
Enjoy.

Not sure if I'll pick it up...I have it for the NGC, and its a great game. Never beat it, but not sure if the Wii Remote add on would make it all that much better.
I want a new RE for the Wii...and not a rail shooter, and really RE

True... unfortunately, I'm not sure what's possible, so I don't really know!
I should imagine the G5 could act as some kind of central storage for the other Macs for iTunes, Photographs etc - but that's just some kind of glorified NAS box. I'm just curious at this point really, how else could it be used?

Planning on ordering a new 2011 iMac with a 256GB SSD and 2TB drive.
Current 2010 iMac hard drive has one drive with about 375GB.
In previous migrations - it was as simple as booting the source Mac with the "T" and allowing the transfer via Firewire.
The full image will not fit on the 256GB SSD. I know I can manually move user files to an external drive and reduce the image for a full copy and then move that data to the HD on the new iMac.
Any better suggestions?
Good question and thread. I'm in the same situation...I have roughly 400GB on my current drive and am planning to move to the dual hard drive setup as well....I was originally thinking of restoring from my Time Machine, but deselecting my Music folder, as thats where basically most of my space goes to, then manually dragging that from Time Machine onto the 1 or 2 TB HD.
This is the best I can think of at the moment. I'd love to hear other ideas though too.

I also found a used for 450 camera sold at London Camera Exchange store and was wondering when enquiring about it what shall I say? Also how many "shutter count" is considered good? for example less than 10,000?
Am I actually talking sense or am I just being silly? :o

Thank you everyone for your comments.
I have the machine sitting next to me now, partially disassembled ready to upgrade but now I do have some more questions....
TO sysiphus
I am a little concerned here that you say it won't be able to do something as simple as streaming a video from Netflix. What is the constraint. This is huge for my because I do tend to watch a lot of streaming Netflix on my primary machine (Which at the moment is a Mini with 2G of Ram hooked to a acer 26" monitor).....
TO Psychomacuser
I found this. Does it help?? M9591LL/A. What is my Max RAM?

Why even buy an iPod Touch like the millions of other sheep and continue to line God Jobs' pockets when you could buy some other device and give Steve-O the finger?:confused:
May I say that you have a very good point there, but at the same time there's a lot of Apps on iOS which aren't available on Android, especially my Epilepsy medication reminder App which has been a godsend to me, especially as I had a seizure a couple of weeks ago which put me in hospital!:(
At the end of the day, I bought the product, so surely I should be able to do what I want with it within reason.
